There are three main ways you can help us in our work with asylum seekers:
SWVG is a small volunteer-led charity dedicated to supporting local asylum seekers and refugees in particular difficulties or distress.
We do this through our members, working in a variety of roles. Some work as Visitors, befriending and supporting individuals on a one-to-one basis in the Southampton area. Others organise communications and fundraising, or work behind the scenes to ensure we manage our organisation efficiently and effectively.
Without our members, we simply could not do what we do. All of them work on a voluntary basis, so we are able to keep our administration costs very low. Thanks to their contribution, we are able to invest over 80% of our income directly into our work with asylum seekers.
We currently have around 60 Members, of whom 43 are Visitors. The visitor’s role can be demanding, but we offer comprehensive training and ongoing support. And if visiting is not for you, we can offer many other kinds of active involvement which may suit you better. We are always happy to talk to potential new volunteers about how we can best use your skills and experience.
All new members are invited to attend a half-day induction and can sign up to receive regular updates.
If you don’t have the time at present to become actively involved as a Member but would still like to support our work, we would very much welcome your help as one of our special Friends.
Our Friends give us permission to keep their details on our Friends database, and receive invitations to events plus regular updates, including our Annual Review.
In 2014/15, 59% of our income came from grant-making trusts and 19% from fund-raising activities. In addition, 22% came from donations.
Public donations are absolutely essential to help fund important aspects of our work, such as high-quality timely legal advice and accommodation and subsistence payments for the asylum seekers we support.
You can donate in lots of different ways – by attending one of our paid-for events, sponsoring a friend for a fund-raising activity, or simply by making an online donation.
Any amount you can give, small or large, will be used effectively and makes a big difference to us as a small local charity.
